The modern manufacturing environment entails a large variety of cross-disciplinary activities including the Design and IT. Engineers consequently are being called upon to work within new environmental, economical and social constraints which are increasingly becoming a part of contemporary engineering practice. Obviously, these elements need to find their way into the engineering curricula. However, traditional engineering instructional formats isolate teaching and research into specific disciplines with un-integrated curricula and therefore the structure of our engineering curricula have hardly changed in accordance with the modern manufacturing needs. Such divisions in the existing higher education formats are found to act as barriers to learning, behavior, and performance.

Another aspect of engineering education which needs to be considered is the basic nature of the IT profession. The IT driven market of today features a model of innovation which is quite different from the research models that most institutes are familiar with. The new market model for innovation emphasizes on fast concept, funds projects with venture capital, fosters innovation by rewarding entrepreneurs who specialize in transforming people's practices to become more productive with the help of new technology. In contrast, the conventional research model emphasizes on careful development of ideas and principles and achieves innovation only after ideas have gone through a long pipeline that distills out the best and brings them into practice over a period of 15-20 years. This dichotomy between the new market-driven model and the conventional idea-pipeline model poses another great challenge to educators of engineering.

The current engineering education system in India, though huge and diverse, is mainly based on the conventional idea of pipeline model. To integrate the knowledge of a given discipline with IT enabled design, prototyping as well as manufacturing considerations, a need therefore exists for developing a new academic programmes. Apart from laying an emphasis on IT, the new approach should also give emphasis on aesthetic, ergonomic and functional considerations of products. The academic programme should also be able to respond to industry driven adaptive management structure.

With above requirements in mind, the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India, felt the need to set up a national institute devoted exclusively for Information Technology (IT), Design & Manufacturing (D & M). It was envisaged that such an academic institute would promote excellence in the desired areas of specialization and would facilitate and promote the competitive advantage of Indian products and manufacturing in global markets. Further, the new Institute would serve as an inter-disciplinary institution for education and research by keeping the concept of Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) in mind. The India Institute of Information Technology, Design & Manufacturing (IIITDM) Jabalpur was thus established in January 2005. Strong industry interface and close cooperation with other academic and research institutions are the key features of this Institute. The IIITDM Jabalpur – Japan collaboration is an aspect of a wider partnership envisaged between Japan and India. The Institute is being developed and nurtured under India - Japan partnership as a unique Institute of its kind with focus on IT enabled design and manufacturing.

Mission

The Mission of the Institute is to create a multidisciplinary academic environment to prepare and train manpower of excellence for nurturing and promoting knowledge-based activities and innovations in design, fabrication and manufacturing of products by bringing together a collaborative and mutually stimulating mix of different fields of science, engineering and arts. In doing so the Institute shall identify current and future agendas for scholarship, share knowledge and discoveries with the world community and actively cultivate individuals with the desire and capability to contribute to society.

Rules For Change Branch:

1. A student may be allowed change of branch on the basis of her/his academic performance, subject to strength constraints of the departments. Change of branch is a privilege and not a right and is awarded normally to meritorious students only.

2. Application for the change of branch should be made at the end of second semester of B.Tech program to the Convener, UGCS.

3. The change of branch will be carried out on the basis of decreasing order of CPI up to second semester of the applicants.

4. The strength of the students in a discipline shall not exceed the larger of its existing and sanctioned strengths or fall below 60 % of its sanctioned strength as a result of branch change.

5. In addition, the top 2% students or students with a CPI of 10 will have the privilege to have any discipline of their choice.

Facilities:
The Institute campus is being developed in a 250 acres land in the area of Meghawa, Dumna Airport Road Jabalpur. The entire academic complex is connected through WiFi network. 

Library :

Institute library has e-resources through INDEST, Science Direct, IEEE, ACM, Springger Link, Nature and ASME .The Institute also has access to various online research journals & articles like following resources SIAm, AMS, ACS, Kluwer, APS, Palgrave, INFORMS, Rev.of Scientific Instruments, Appl.Physics Letters and the search engine Scopus. Total number of books in the Institute library by the year 2009-10 are approximately 6742. 

Lab Infrastructure :

Advanced Manufacturing Laboratory :

This Laboratory contains Rapid Prototyping Machine, CNC Controlled Abrasive Waterjet Machine, CNC Milling Center, CNC Turning Center, Dynamometer, Electro Chemical Machining System, Injection Moulding Machine etc. 

Biometric Laboratory :

This Laboratory contains S Series, H Series, W Series cameras and p6 p520(Tower Model), p6 p520:8203 Model servers Made by IBM etc. 

Signal System & Control Lab:

This laboratory is equipped with DSP Starter SPARTAN-3 kit (DSK), TMS 320C6713 DSK with CCS (Code Composer Studio), Image Daughter Kit with CCD Cameras, Bloom with DSP, Matrox Imaging Library, Matrox Morphis, Frame Graber Card, Color CCD Camera for online Processing etc. Interactive &Non-interactive conical Tank System , Four Tank System, Analysis of DC control motor system (PWM Method) kit, R-C firing circuit analysis kit, SCR characteristics. 

High Performance Computing Labortory :

Specification of Parallel Cluster (for Central Computing Facility)- JS22 Blade No.3, 16GB(2*8GB) DDR2 533 Mhz DiMMs, IBM 146GB SAS 10K SFF HDD, IBM blade center JS22 4-core 4.0 Ghz Processor and WiFi Campus etc. 

Infrared Imaging Laboratory :

This Laboratory contains Radiometeric calibration, Extender rings, NDT Base Module, Central computing unit with TFT display, Software Modules for Lockin, Transient-and Pulse Measurement, Module Pulse- and Transient- Thermography, Source for Vibro- Thermography etc. 

Materials Research Laboratory :

This Laboratory contains three important instruments for material characterization which are X-Ray Diffractometer (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) including SPM, MFM etc. 

Computational ECE Lab :

This lab is equipped with advanced Electronic and Electromagnetic simulation and design tools:   Lumerical FDTD Solutions, CST Microwave studio, Synopsis, Cadence, Silvaco and TCAD, High end workstations and 30 desktop computers.

Microwave Radiation Lab:

This laboratory is well equipped with research facilities: Spectrum Analyzer (100KHz- 3GHz), Agilent ENA series Vector Network Analyzer (300KHz-20GHz), Rapid PCB Prototyping Machine (LPKF) for RF and Microwave fabrication, Radiation Meter, Microwave test Benches and components, MIC Kits and accessories, Antennas: Horn Antenna, Dielectric Resonator Antenna, parabolic Disc, Slotted Antenna. 

Communication Engineering Lab :

This laboratory is equipped with various trainer kits and equipments: AM, FM, PAM, PPM, PWM, μ-Law & A-Law Compressor and Decompressor, TDM, FDM, PCM, BFSK , Sigma Delta Modulator & Demodulator, Adaptive Delta, CDMA-DSSS, GSM, Satellite communication Trainer, Fiber Optic Trainer (Modulation, Bending Loss, Measurement of Optical Power, Numerical Aperture), Spectrum Analyzer, DSO. 

Nanoelectronics & VLSI Lab :

Presently this laboratory has Characterization equipment make Keithley, FPGA Kit and Verilog software.

Automobile Lab :

Machine Dynamics and Vibrations :
