About the Institute:

IMPORTANT THINGS TO NOTE FOR THOSE WISHING TO JOIN IIIT GUWAHATI

  1.  Fees are Rs. 1,25,000 per semester. Hostel fees are Rs. 12,500 per semester and Mess dues are about Rs. 4000/- per month. In the first semester there is a Rs. 5000 Caution money to be paid. So in the first semester the total amount that needs to be paid is 1,30,000, excluding the mess fee and the hostel fee. If a student joins a hostel, then he /she will have to pay hostel fees and mess fees. Due to the Pandemic, it is not certain if students will have to come and stay on campus. Currently, we allow students to voluntarily come and stay on campus, allotting one student to one room. So we will not be collecting hostel fees and mess fees upfront. These will be collected on pro-rata basis as and when a student comes to stay on campus.

  2. Every student must have a laptop of his / her own. You must bring your laptop with you when you join IIITG.

  3. There is NO concession in fees for SC / ST or any other category of students. So make sure you have enough funds before you choose IIITG.

  4. Institute will help in obtaining Bank loans; State Govts give scholarships; the top ten SC and the top ten ST students will be eligible for Central Govt Scholarships. However, students have to be ready with money for the first semester’s fees as Bank loans and scholarship fund releases take time.

  5. Students should have a NET banking facility from any bank, although payment by Debit cards and Credit cards will also be possible; all payments to the institute needs to be made through the “SBI Collect”  (https://www.onlinesbi.com/sbicollect/icollecthome.htm) portal. If your debit / credit card has an upper limit on payments, break up your payments into multiple payments.

  6. DUE TO COVID-19, we are not sure if you will be able to come to campus immediately on admission. We will follow Govt. norms and directives in this regard.

Indian Institute of Information Technology Guwahati (IIITG) is an institution under MHRD, Govt. of India. It offers B Tech courses in Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) and Computer Science Engineering (CSE), M.Tech programmes in CSE and ECE, and runs PhD programmes  in ECE, CSE, Mathematics, and Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS). IIITG began offering B.Tech programmes in CSE and ECE since August, 2013. The first batch of B. Tech students graduated in May 2017. The first convocation was held on 15 May, 2018.

IIITG is one of the 20 IIITs set up by the Central Govt. in PPP mode. A Bill (Act of Parliament) to declare all the PPP-IIITs (including IIITG) as Institutes of National Importance was passed by both the houses of the Indian parliament in July, 2017.

In its very first year when it became eligible, IIITG has got a rank of 66 in the Engineering category of NIRF 2020. What is even more notable is that it is ranked the highest among all Ministry of Education (MoE) IIITs! This includes even the older, Govt. funded IIITs! We were not eligible for ranking in the Overall category as we have less than 1000 students. IIITG continues to be ranked the highest among all MoE IIITs in NIRF 2021, with a rank of 73 in the Engineering category.

IIITG strives to be attentive to academic needs of every student. Classes are conveniently scheduled between 9 A.M. to 5 P. M. Every class room is air-conditioned and has projection facilities. For online classes, we are subscribing to a Learning Management System (LMS) through which we deliver our lectures. For online examinations, we have subscribed to another Cloud based software.  An Institute-wide wi-fi system provides Internet access throughout the Institute. Further, DG  power back up is available in case of power failure. The permanent campus has been constructed on 67 acres of land about 4 km from Guwahati airport.

The foundation stone for its permanent campus was laid on 19 January, 2016 by Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi in the august presence of former Governor of Assam Shri Janaki Ballabh Patnaik, former  Chief Minister of Assam Shri Tarun Gogoi and former Minister of Human Resources & Development Smt Smriti Zubin Irani. The institute moved to its permanent campus in July, 2018. Prof. Gautam Barua former Director of IIT Guwahati is the Director of the Institute.

Example of amounts to be paid at admission time to the Institute.

Case 1: General / OBC candidate paid JOSAA Rs. 40,000 as partial fees to JOSAA. JOSAA retains Rs. 2000/- as processing fee. So the amount payable to the Institute is 1,30,000 – 38,000 = Rs. 92,000.00

Case 2: SC / ST/ PwD  candidate paid JOSAA Rs. 20,000 as partial fees to JOSAA. JOSAA retains Rs. 2000/- as processing fee. So the amount payable to the Institute is 1,30,000 – 18,000 = Rs. 1,12,000.00

Case 3: General / OBC candidate paid JOSAA Rs. 40,000 as partial fees to JOSAA. Then student opted for CSAB special rounds and paid another Rs. 2000/- to CSAB.  JOSAA retains Rs. 2000/- as processing fee, and CSAB keeps the Rs 2000 it received as CSAB processing fees. So the amount payable to the Institute is 1,30,000 – 38,000 = Rs. 92,000.00

Case 4: SC/ST/ PwD candidate paid JOSAA Rs. 20,000 as partial fees to JOSAA. Then student opted for CSAB special rounds and paid another Rs. 2000/- to CSAB.  JOSAA retains Rs. 2000/- as processing fee, and CSAB keeps the Rs 2000 it received as CSAB processing fees. So the amount payable to the Institute is 1,30,000 – 18,000 = Rs. 1,12,000.00

Hostel Fees and Mess Charges

These will be charged when a student joins a hostel. Charges will be on a pro-rata basis, based on how long a student stays in a hostel and avails mess facilities. Nothing is to be paid at admission time in 2021-22.

Hostel Fees:  Rs. 12,500 per semester

Mess Charges: Rs. 4000 per month (this is the current estimate. It may vary, and charges will be  at actuals)

Academic Structure:

At IIITG, undergraduate education emphasizes on a broad academic foundation, development of deep subject-area knowledge, a variety of rich learning experiences inside and outside the classroom, and cultivation of skills to help students become lifelong learners. With an enduring dedication to the pursuit of excellence, IIIT-G offers unparalleled student experiences across a broad spectrum of academics environment. The B.Tech courses offered at IIITG are:

B.Tech. in CSE

The programme is designed to create innovators and researchers. Students are given a strong foundation in CSE that includes electronics and hardware. The B.Tech (CSE) program at IIIT-Guwahati starts with computing oriented courses first, and allows the possibility of doing science courses later. Besides being better suited for an IT program, it also enables the possibility of students seeing newer applications and possibilities of relating IT with these subjects.

B.Tech. in ECE

The programme is designed to create innovators and researchers. ECE courses like electronics, signals & systems, communications, VLSI, and embedded systems are introduced in the early semesters. Students also take a number of CSE oriented courses: Programming, Data Structures, Operating Systems, Networks.  The main objectives of the B. Tech(ECE) program are to produce students who are well prepared for Indian industry with necessary core competency to succeed long-term in engineering/entrepreneurship careers (post B. Tech), and who are well prepared to undertake PG studies and research careers.

The academic year has been divided into two semesters namely the MONSOON semester from July – Dec and the WINTER semester from Jan – May.

The winter vacation period for students is generally in the month of December and the summer vacation period is from the beginning of May to the third week of July.

Curriculum

First year courses are common for both CSE & ECE. This gives greater flexibility to the students to change their preferred program after the first two semesters. After the first year common program, the second year program will be relatively fixed, comprising mostly of core courses for the program. Third year onwards, the program will be more flexible comprising of electives, which may be organized as streams.

There is one HSS course every semester, for a total of eight courses. Courses in Physics (2), Chemistry, and Biology are taught from Semester III onwards.
