Academic Structure:

At IIITG, undergraduate education emphasizes on a broad academic foundation, development of deep subject-area knowledge, a variety of rich learning experiences inside and outside the classroom, and cultivation of skills to help students become lifelong learners. With an enduring dedication to the pursuit of excellence, IIIT-G offers unparalleled student experiences across a broad spectrum of academics environment. The B.Tech courses offered at IIITG are:

B.Tech. in CSE

The programme is designed to create innovators and researchers. Students are given a strong foundation in CSE that includes electronics and hardware. The B.Tech (CSE) program at IIIT-Guwahati starts with computing oriented courses first, and allows the possibility of doing science courses later. Besides being better suited for an IT program, it also enables the possibility of students seeing newer applications and possibilities of relating IT with these subjects.

B.Tech. in ECE

The programme is designed to create innovators and researchers. ECE courses like electronics, signals & systems, communications, VLSI, and embedded systems are introduced in the early semesters. Students also take a number of CSE oriented courses: Programming, Data Structures, Operating Systems, Networks.  The main objectives of the B. Tech(ECE) program are to produce students who are well prepared for Indian industry with necessary core competency to succeed long-term in engineering/entrepreneurship careers (post B. Tech), and who are well prepared to undertake PG studies and research careers.

The academic year has been divided into two semesters namely the MONSOON semester from July – Dec and the WINTER semester from Jan – May.

The winter vacation period for students is generally in the month of December and the summer vacation period is from the beginning of May to the third week of July.

Curriculum

First year courses are common for both CSE & ECE. This gives greater flexibility to the students to change their preferred program after the first two semesters. After the first year common program, the second year program will be relatively fixed, comprising mostly of core courses for the program. Third year onwards, the program will be more flexible comprising of electives, which may be organized as streams.

There is one HSS course every semester, for a total of eight courses. Courses in Physics (2), Chemistry, and Biology are taught from Semester III onwards.

Rules For Change Branch:

1.       The Institute permits a student to change from one programme to another after the first two semesters. Such changes will be permitted, in accordance with the provisions laid down hereafter.

2.       After the second semester, only those students will be considered eligible for change of branch/programme, who have completed and passed all the common credits required in the first two semesters of their studies in their first attempt.

3.       Change of branch/programme shall be made strictly in order of merit of the applicants. For this purpose the CPI obtained at the end of the second semester shall be considered. In case of a tie, the JEE rank of the applicants will be considered.

4.       The applicants may be allowed a change in branch/programme, strictly in order of inter se merit,

subject to the limitation that the strength of a branch should not fall below the existing strength by more than ten percent and should not go above the sanctioned strength by more than ten percent.

5.       All changes of branch/programme made in accordance with the above rules will be effective from the third semester of the applicants concerned. No change of branch/programme shall be permitted after this.

With a batch size of 155 in CSE, it can grow to at most 171 students and it must be at least 139. With a batch size of 78 in ECE, it can grow to at most 86 students and it must be at least 70. So, if only requests for branch change are from ECE to CSE, then 8 ECE students will get a branch change.

Most of the rooms are single room with attached washrooms. There are a few Shared (amongst two students) rooms as well. Each hostel has a common Dining Space, Recreation room and manned with 24x7 security and backed with 24-hour power backup supply, lift-service and high-speed internet connection.

Campus-Network

IIITG provides 24x7 campus wide connectivity to its community. On campus, students can access high-speed (1 Gbps) LAN and Wi-fi. IIITG is part of National Knowledge Network (NKN), which ensures 1 Gbps connection.

Laboratories

Labs are of immense importance to study core engineering subjects like computer science or electronics and communication. At IIITG, the labs are well equipped with state-of-the art equipment and latest hi-tech gadgets. The lab assistants are experienced and guide the students with competence through both curriculum and research work.  Our labs foster an atmosphere of independent research under the guidance of instructors. Further, students are allowed to perform experiments individually or in a group of two.

Library

The IIITG library is stocked with a good number of books and online journals to cater to the needs of the students, research scholars and faculty members of IIITG. The Library currently has 1,214 printed volume of Books and subscribes to the IEEE, ACM  and JSTOR e-journal packages through which the users can get access to 218 journals (approx.) and 3698 conference proceedings (approx.). Users can access these online resources in their electronic devices i.e. laptops, tablets etc. since the library is Wi-Fi enabled . The library has a spacious and well-lit reading room.  It fosters an atmosphere for academic learning and ensures a decorum of discipline, so that the students can concentrate their entire focus on learning. Library automation is being implemented.

Academic Activities

The institute frequently organizes talks by academicians and industry experts. IIITG is the birthplace of Perspective - an interdisciplinary group of scholars and faculty members. Perspective organizes monthly lectures and periodic workshops. (https://perspectivemeet.wordpress.com/)

Several short-term course and workshops were held under TEQIP -III

·         Embedded Systems

·         VLSI Design

·         Signal Processing

Student Life at Institute:

A Students’ Gymkhana Council co-ordinates student activities. Members are elected by direct elections. Faculty advisors assist the Student Body. Co-curricular activities are an integral part of a student’s life in IIITG. Our winter semesters are abuzz with sports and a cultural fest – Yuvaan. Students compete in both outdoor (Football, Cricket, Kabaddi, Volleyball), indoor (Chess, Carom, Badminton, Table Tennis, arm-wrestling, computer games) and cultural events (singing, dance, play).
Summer semesters are relatively quiet with students concentrating on their studies. Students can explore urban life surrounding the institute in Guwahati. The excellent location of the institute allows students to explore nearby libraries, museums, restaurants and markets.

Hostel Life

The student hostels are situated in the Campus itself. There are two hostels, one for boys with capacity of accomodating 400 students and the other for girls with capacity 100. Most of the rooms are single room with attached washrooms. There are a few Shared (amongst two students) rooms as well. Each hostel has a common Dining Space, Recreation room and manned with 24x7 security and backed with 24-hour power backup supply, lift-service and high-speed internet connection.

Music, dance, drama, writing, art – all find expression in Yuvaan. It is a fun-filled event that brings out and celebrates the real spirit that IIITG fosters.
IIITG realises that fundamental imperatives like teamwork, leadership and sportsman-spirit are acquired only on the sports field. Therefore, despite a temporary campus, IIITG has done it’s level best for its sports-enthusiast students. There are provisions for badminton, volleyball and table tennis within the temporary campus itself. Apart from this, the college arranges for regular visits to an off-campus playground where students play cricket and football with equipment provided by the college.

Recreational/Extra Curricular activities:

Sports & Recreation

A healthy mind resides in a healthy body. Sports and games are a major aspect of complete development both physically and mentally for a person. In this competitive age, sports is equally essential to supplement and enhance the academic development. The students at IIITG indulge in a number of sporting activities like basketball, football, badminton, etc. which inculcate in them a spirit to participate, compete and win.

IIIT Guwahati has its annual techno-cultural-sports fest named “Yuvaan” to give equal opportunities to boys and girls to portray their skills in various fields of recreation and sports. Also, we encourage students to take part in various inter IIIT/institutes sports events, so as to cater the need of performance outside the campus premises on which our students perform at par with other institutes. IIIT Guwahati secured overall second runner’s up trophy in the  recent inter IIIT sports meet held at IIITDM Kancheepuram, 2016. Also, in the same meet, one of our students emerged as a dark horse in carom bagging a Gold medal for IIITG and was adjudged the best player in the category.
