About the Institute:

The National Institute of Technology Puducherry is an ‘Institute of National Importance’, functioning under the aegis of Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Govt. of India. It’s a premier autonomous technical Institute of the region, established under the 11th Five year plan vide order No.F-23-13/2009-TS dated 30th October, 2009 by an act of parliament (NIT act 2007).

 Historical Background: An Overview:

Ø  NIT Puducherry started functioning from the academic year 2010-2011 onwards, from its transit yet independent campus, at Arignar Anna Government Arts and Science College, Nehru Nagar, Karaikal and shifted to its own permanent campusin August 2016.

Ø  It commenced with three pioneering Engineering departments – namely, (1) Computer Science and Engineering (2) Electronics and Communication Engineering and (3) Electrical and Electronics Engineering at undergraduate level.

Ø  It saw the addition of B. Tech course in Mechanical engineering and M. Tech Courses in Computer Science and Engineering in the year 2014. Also M.Tech course in Communication Systems in ECE and M.Tech course in Power Electronics in EEE in the year 2018 -2019

Ø   Presently NIT Puducherry serves to be a brand name, attracting students from country and worldwide. The Institute admits students into the B.Tech degree program on the basis of ranks obtained in the Joint Entrance Examination Main since 2013 (prior ,through AIEEE till 2012) , and through the scheme of Direct Admission of Students Abroad (DASA).

Ø  The students are admitted into M.Tech programme through Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE). Recently, NITPY has started the Ph.D program and demand for seats is increasing in fervour.

 Present Status: A Glance

Ø  Currently, NITPY has grown to be one of the most respected names in the field of technical education in the country. Today, the institution is recognized as an institute of national importance along with the IITs and IIMs by the NIT Act. The dynamic and constantly evolving academic programme curriculum reflects the institute’s commitment to stay abreast with the expanding frontiers of knowledge and its commitment to a well groomed academic curriculum.

Academic Structure:

B.Tech Programmes

            The Institute admits students into the B.Tech degree program (4 year) on the basis of ranks obtained in the Joint Entrance Examination, JEE Mains since 2013 (Prior, through AIEEE till 2012) and the scheme of Direct Admission of Students Abroad (DASA). This current year, the institute has admitted under graduate program of Bachelor of Technology in the following branches:

    Computer Science and Engineering (Intake- 60)

    Electronics and Communication Engineering (Intake- 60)

    Electrical and Electronics Engineering (Intake- 60)

    Mechanical Engineering (Intake- 30)

   Civil Engineering (Intake- 30)

M.Tech Programmes

            M.Tech. Programme (2 year course) in Computer Science and Engineering has commenced from the academic year 2014-2015, with an intake of fifteen students. Also M.Tech. programme in ECE and EEE is going to be commenced from the academic year 2018-2019 with an intake of ten students for each department. The students are admitted into M.Tech programme through Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE).

Ph.D Programmes

          NITPY has started the Ph. D program in CSE, EEE, ECE, Mechanical, Civil and Science and Humanicatics and the demand for seats is increasing in fervour.

DASA ADMISSION

            Indian education system is well known for wide area of specialization and affordability. The Centrally Funded Institutes of India such as IITs and NITs are globally acclaimed for their high standard of education. National Institute of Technology Puducherry is one of the Centrally Funded Institute of India, which seeks the admission of foreign nationals and the Indian students studying abroad into the UG programme of National Institute of Puducherry, through Direct Admission of Students Abroad (DASA) scheme. Since the inception of NIT Puducherry in 2010, DASA admission keeps on increasing as the institute is concerned about the student performance in all the aspects.

UG Programmes

NIT Puducherry currently offers UG programme in five streams under this scheme such as:

    Electrical and Electronics Engineering

CSE, ECE, and EEE branches of engineering has a DASA intake of EIGHTEEN students. Mechanical and Civil branches of engineering has DASA intake of NINE students.

Facilities:

The National Institute of Technology, Puducherry is situated in Karaikal and its campus spreads over an astounding 256 acres of land.

Ø  The foundation stone of the permanent campus was laid in February 2011 in the village town of Poovam.

Ø  The plan of the building includes separate blocks for all departments, wi-fi enabled auditoriums, modern libraries and all the facilities of a prestigious institute. 

Ø  The layouts of the academic blocks are designed under a clean and green perspective with futuristic insight including state-of-the-art lecture halls, hi-tech labs suitable for research and Wi-Fi enabled classrooms etc.

Ø  Its well equipped with hostels, science and administrative blocks, the structure is as much a treat to the eyes as it accommodates the ideal needs of an emerging educational institute, providing the required ambience and facilities for research and development as well.

Training & Placement:

The Training and Placement Cell of NITPY has emerged as a favoured destination for many organisations/Multi-national companies to recruit the fresh talents nurtured in this institution. The institution showcased good placement profile from the beginning. The major objectives of the training and placement cell are as follows:

Ø  To provide adequate training to students making them eligible to efficiently face placement process.

Ø  To provide an active interface between potential employers and the students, i.e. establishing an active placement system.

Ø  The training and placement cell strives to develop relations with recruiters in every field, ensuring wide choice in the student’s career opportunities which serves as a guarantee to his/her satisfaction, both with the company and the cell.

Recreational/Extra Curricular activities:

Apart from the normal routine academic activities, NITPY provides various extracurricular activities to enrich skills and knowledge of the students beyond academics.

  • The various departments in NITPY conduct three symposiums every year, namely KNOSYS from the Dept. of Computer Science and Engineering, TARANGG from the Dept. of Electronics and Communication Engineering, SPREEE from the Dept. of Electrical and Electronics Engineering. Last Year NITPY conducted UTKARSHA (Cultural Fest) and GYANITH (TECHNICAL FEST).

  • These symposiums provide platform for the students across the country to assemble, interact, share, gain knowledge in the various fields of Engineering and Technology.

  • Through these symposiums, budding engineers and scientists from all over the nation are attracted to display their skills in the challenging and exciting events with an aim to design exercising their brains and to inculcate a spirit of technology in their hearts.

  • To add, numerous technical and non-technical events are held on a regular basis, which attracts participation from countrywide students. The students of NITPY share and enhance their knowledge through various clubs and committees. To name a  few of them;

Ø  Foss Club

Free open source software society is formed to support and promote usage of open source application, rather than accustomed to stereotyped usage of proprietary software.

The society provides a platform to explore, learn, develop and share the open source culture. It meets every fortnight, and exchanges the knowledge through discussions, lecture and practical sessions.

 Ø  Literary Club

Aimed at fostering and developing the verbal skills of the students, the literary club apart from publishing its annual magazine, IGNITE: the voice of NITPY, conducts various events including debates, group discussions and competitions as such to promote a healthy growth of vocational skills.

 Ø  Innovation club

Comprises of associations like robotics, electrical, electronics, mechanical, computer enthusiast group and is widely responsible for inspiring the students and aids them by providing a platform for research in innovative and thrust areas of engineering and technology.

 Ø  Sports Club

Apart from being the location for the inter-NIT tournament annually, the sports day: a culminating day of varied sports activities, is also held along with the students participating in various national and state level competitions and bagging top positions and awards.

Ø  Cultural Club

An amalgamation of cultural activities are organized and conducted by the cultural club at NITPY annually with an aim to showcase the rich culture brought forward in NITPY and importance given to traditional values.

NITPY is located on the National Highway NH45, at about 50 kms from Chidambaram towards south. The nearest domestic airport to our college is Puducherry Airport.
