About the Institute:

History

The National Institute of Technology Patna is the Eighteenth National Institute created by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India, upon rechristening a new name to the erstwhile Bihar College of Engineering, Patna. The Institute admits 706 students to the undergraduate (B. Tech, B. Arch. and integrated courses in Maths, Physics and Chemistry) and about 126 students to the Post Graduate Programs (M Tech and M Arch) every year on the basis of all India competition. It offers degree courses and post graduate courses in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electronics & Communication Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering and Information Technology & Architecture. The Institute has created Department of Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Humanities and Social Science. The Institute is partially residential in nature providing facilities for accommodation to some of its students as well as the teaching staffs in its about 36 acres campus. The activities of the Institute are growing at faster rate towards achievements of Global Standard.

Location

NIT Patna is situated on the south bank of river Ganges behind Gandhi Ghat, one of the most important reverence places of Patna. The Institute campus is 8 km from the Patna Junction railway station and 15 km from the Jai Prakash Narayan International Airport Patna. The entry to the institute is from Ashok Rajpath and it is about 3 km from Gandhi Maidan.

Campus

The existing infrastructures provide a conducive environment with an exciting campus life so necessary for professional growth. Behind the historic administrative building lies the main academic building which also houses the Civil Engineering Department and class rooms. The Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Departments face one another about 200 meters west from the Administrative Building. The department of Architecture, Electronics and Communication, Computer Science and Engineering, the Centre for water resources studies is located in separate buildings 300 meters to the east of administrative building. The institute has  well equipped Computer Centre, Central Library nearby main building and Design Innovation Centre.  The institute is now well equipped with several other facilities like large lecture theaters with modern equipment and amenities, smart class rooms and Guest House. A separate Medical centre, auditorium and extension to Departments are likely to come up very soon. A new Girls Hostel on the bank of river Ganga  accommodates all girl students of the institute. A new Boys Hostel for first year students has been commissioned with state of the art facilities like modular kitchen, wi-fi and special facilities for differently abled students.

The Institute has a big playground where many National level football and cricket matches were arranged in the past when Patna had no stadium. The extra-curricular activities include facilities for outdoor and indoor games, open air theatre. We also have a local chapter of SPICMACAY for extra-curricular activities and student chapter for American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), and Society of Automobile Engineers (SAE). NIT Patna is the Institutional member of the Indian Society for Technical Education (ISTE) which is devoted to promotion of quality and standards in technical education. Allahabad bank is operating in the campus.

A very good Students Activity Centre is another attraction of the campus, with many modern facilities, cafeteria,  world class Badminton and Squash court, modern Gymnasium separately for boys and girls, and other facilities related to students activity.

The Institute runs several essential services in the campus namely suitable drinking water, sanitation and maintenance of cleanliness, security arrangements,  own Doctors and Ambulance service for medical emergency help, EPABX and Internet facilities.

(b)       Only those students will be eligible for consideration for a change of branch after the Second (Spring) Semester, who have·

(i)        Completed all the credits prescribed in the first semesters of their studies, in their first attempt without having had to pass any course requirement in the special examination and/ or summer quarter.

(ii)       Obtained a CGPA, at the end of the Second (Spring) Semester, not lower than (i) 8.25 for a change to another Engineering discipline

(c)       Students admitted to 4 - Year B. Tech. Programs are eligible for consideration for a change of branch to any Engineering course.

Application for a change of branch must be made by intending eligible students in the form prescribed for this purpose. The Dean (Academic) will call for application sometime in the Spring Semester of each academic year and the completed forms must be submitted to him by the last date specified in his notification.

(d)       Students may enlist up to five choices of branch, In order of preference, to which they wish to change over. It will not be permissible to alter the choices after the application has been submitted.

(e)       Change of branch shall be made strictly on the basis of inter se merit of the applicants. For this purpose the CGPA obtained at the end of the second (Spring) Semester shall be considered. Ties will be broken by the JEE (MAINS) rank of the applicants.

                                               i)        In making the change of branch, those applicants shall be first considered who have secured a rank within top 1% (one percent), rounded to the nearest integer, amongst all the first year students in terms of the CGPA scored at the end of the second (spring) Semester. Change of branch requested for by such applicants shall be made without any constraint.

ii)        The remaining applicants may be allowed a change of branch, strictly in order of inter se merit, subject to the limitation that the actual number of students in the third (Autumn) Semester, in the branch to which the transfer is to be made, does not exceed 110% of the sanctioned yearly intake for that Branch.

(f)        All changes of branch made in accordance with the above rules will be effective from the Third (autumn) Semester of the applicants concerned. No changes of branch shall be permitted here after.

(g)       All changes of branch will be final and binding on the applicants. No student will be permitted, under any circumstances, to refuse the change of branch offered,

(h)      Notwithstanding the provisions of foregoing paragraphs the Senate may, under very special circumstances, permit the transfer of a student from one branch to another, in deviation of the above mentioned rules. In each such case the special reasons for which the transfer is permitted must be recorded in the Senate resolution. Such transfers, if any, will be over and above the regular transfers, and their number will not be counted in the computation of 'Actual Number of Students' in a given branch
