About the Institute:

The Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines), Dhanbad was established by the Government of India in 1926 on the pattern of Royal School of Mines, London to teach Mining Engineering and Applied Geology to provide manpower for the Indian Mineral Industry and the concerned departments of the Government. Subsequently in 1957, Petroleum Engineering and Applied Geophysics disciplines were added. In due recognition of its vital role in the service of the mineral exploration and mining sectors of the national economy, IIT(ISM) was granted autonomy by the Government of India in 1967; and has been functioning as a Deemed University under the University Grants Commission Act, 1956. In 1996, it came under financial and administrative control of MHRD, Government of India. Subsequently in the year, 2016, Govt. of India notified Vide S.O.2870(E) of No.2173, Part II Section 3 – Sub section (ii) of the Gazette of India dated 6th September 2016, the conversion of Indian School of Mines Dhanbad as Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines), Dhanbad. It has a fully residential campus consisting of graceful blend of traditional and modern architecture. The serene campus comprises academic buildings, separate hostels for boys and girls, faculty & staff quarters, health centre, workshop, Student Activity Centre (SAC), canteen and other infrastructural facilities for its cosmopolitan community. The Institute is situated about 3 km north of Dhanbad Railway Station on the Grand Chord of Eastern Railway. IIT(ISM) being situated at the core of the industrial base of the region covering mines, steel plants, fertilizer plants, refractories, heavy machine building plants etc. derives locational advantage in learning and teaching process in terms of keeping abreast with changing technology in the industry.
