About the Institute:
Indian Institute of Technology Patna was established by an Act of Parliament in 2008 along with eight new IITs. Initially it was under the mentorship of IIT Guwahati. IIT Patna has successfully created a niche for itself in the area of academics and research within a short span of time. The institute infuses new and fresh energy and vigor in a region that has been a centre of knowledge since ancient times. IIT Patna aims to bring prosperity and enhancement to life through quality and holistic education and pioneering research. With a faculty who have a wide range of academic and research experience, IIT  Patna is successfully running B.Tech., M.Tech. and Ph.D. programs in Engineering, Sciences and Humanities and Social Sciences . From 2016, the institute is going to run MSc in three subjects viz. Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.The Institute aims to encourage collaborative activities along with leadership skills among students. Students are encouraged to participate in various co-curricular activities and visits to nearby industrial units help in honing their skills and knowledge. About Patna

Patna is an ancient city and was earlier known as 'Patliputra'. Situated on the banks of the river Ganges, this city has been a centre of knowledge and has attracted visitors from China, Indonesia, Japan, Korea and other nations. The ancient city was home to some of the greatest minds of the time like Aryabhatta who worked on Astronomy, Algebra and trigonometry and introduced the concept of 'zero', Chanakya who is famous for his treatises on Economics and Politics. Modern Patna too does not lag far behind. It has produced illustrious people like Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the first President of independent India and many political figures and jurists of renown. Its rich history is visible in the various buildings which showcase elements of Afghani, Mughal and British architecture. Some of the historical legends from this region include Lord Gautam Buddha, Lord Mahavir, Guru Govind Singh.

Campus Location

IIT Patna has moved to its permanent campus which is situated in Bihta. The new campus  was inaugurated by Honorable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.The permanent campus, spread over  500 acres of land, is full with flora and fauna.

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering

Welcome to the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (DCEE) at Indian Institute of Technology Patna. DCEE at IIT Patna is established in 2012 that constitutes of five independent disciplines namely, Structural Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Water Resources Engineering, and Environmental Engineering. Since its inception, the Department has continually upgraded itself in terms of academic programmes and state-of-the-art teaching and research laboratories. The Department currently offers a four-year course (Bachelors degree) in Civil Engineering and two-year course (Master’s degree) in Civil and Infrastructure Engineering. The Department also provides doctoral programmes on emerging research areas (viz., Structural Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Railway Engineering, Water Resources Engineering, and Environmental Engineering). All our curricula are designed keeping in mind the infrastructure requirements for improved quality of life in a growing society as well as for industry and economic development with a firm intent to meet the challenges of tomorrow. The Department attracts the finest young and dynamic faculty members, and the best of students for its Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral programmes. Department of Electrical Engineering, IIT Patna

Department of Electrical Engineering has started in 2008 and since last year the department grown to the top level of core research and teaching in the advanced topics of electrical engineering. We have strong undergraduate program B. Tech., and post graduate programs like M. Tech and PhD in various specialization of electrical engineering.  We revise our curriculum according to the need of today’s research and industry applications. Hence the teaching is focused on fundamental principles of electrical engineering and applications. The primary focus of our curriculum is to convey technical know-how to students, promote their problem solving skills and innovation of new technologies. Department offers large number of optional courses so that our undergraduate students are encouraged to undertake various research projects.  We carry out collaborative and interdisciplinary research in various industries, reputed institutes and research centers worldwide. We have modern research and laboratory facility to cater the needs of young faculty members. Our department has a distinguished record in both teaching and research. Faculty members have excellent academic credentials and are highly regarded all over the world. They have been conferred with many prestigious awards at national and international levels. Several faculty members serve on the editorial boards of national and international journals, review technical articles for journals on a regular basis, and organize international symposia and conferences. A Teacher Learning center for Internet of Things in association with IIT Kanpur, Kharagpur and Indore was developed in the Department of Electrical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Patna. Under Aegis of Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya National Mission on Teachers and Teaching (PMMMNMTT), MHRD, GOVERNMENT OF INDIA. The sponsored projects of national important such as IMPRINT have been awarded to the department. Our department looks forward to contribute in solving the technological challenges of the society with active participation from all sections of the society.


Department of Mechanical Engineering

The Department of Mechanical Engineering started in August 2008 with the inception of IIT Patna. The vision of the department is to engage in frontiers of the field and channelize the state-of-the-art knowledge to train personnel who can solve problems of relevance to the society at large. While imparting high quality education, emphasis is being imparted on taking up innovative ideas from concept stage to final product development stage via the route of basic technology research, feasibility studies, technology improvement, demonstration and product development.


    At present department has around 190 undergraduate and 90 graduate students, currently being supported by a team of 17 highly enthusiastic faculty members and 7 trained technical staff members. The department offers Bachelor of Technology degree in Mechanical Engineering and Master of Technology degree in Mechanical Engineering with specialization in Thermal and Fluids, Manufacturing, and Master of Technology degree in Mechatronics streams. In addition, the Department has a successful Ph.D. program with over fifty scholars performing research in various contemporary fields of Mechanical Engineering. A total of ten students have graduated with Doctoral Degree and have embarked on promising career path including jobs at leading industrial firms in addition to faculty and post-doctoral positions at national and international universities of repute


    The faculty members in the Department venture in diverse multidisciplinary fields including surface engineering, soft-tissue mechanics, non-traditional manufacturing, laser material processing, condition monitoring, biomedical robotics, biomedical bone drilling, computational mechanics, fracture, finite element modelling, composites, fire, micro- and nano-scale heat transfer, boiling, condensation, two-phase flows, refrigeration and air-conditioning, computational fluid dynamics, colloids and interfacial science, soft computing, and microgravity, among others. Such activities are aptly supported by 16 state-of-the-art research cum teaching laboratories.

  • Best paper award to Mr. Siddharth Suman in 2017 5th International Conference on Energy Engineering and Environmental Engineering, 15-16 April, China.
  • IITP student team secured 2nd runner-up in ASME HPVC 2017.
  • Best paper award is to two final years B.Tech. mechanical students Mr. Vishal Nagarkoti, and Mr. Omprakash Sahu in the 6th International and 43rd National Conference on Fluid Mechanics and Fluid Power (FMFP2016) held in MNNITA, Allahabad, India during December 15-17, 2016.
  • Best poster award to Mr. Deepak Kumar Prajapati, Ph.D. scholar, Mechanical Engineering Department in National Tribology Conference (NTC 2016) IIT BHU, India during December 8-10, 2016.


 

Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, IIT Patna

The Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) was established in September, 2013. The department has five (5) dynamic faculty members, with their teaching, research and consultancy activities in various areas ranging from metal, ceramic and polymer. At present, department offers M.Tech. and Ph.D degrees. Over the last four years, Department takes pride for developing the wide spectrum of state-of-the-art laboratories both for teaching and research purposes.

MSE has set-up the world-class plasma spray coating facility (OerlikonMetco, USA), which has the potential of fabricating the large domain of metal and ceramic coating for the wear and corrosion resistance applications.  In addition, sophisticated micro indentation with the scratch tester (Microtest, Spain), potentiostat/galvanostat (GAMRY, USA) for measuring the corrosion rate, basic sample preparation lab including the low speed diamond saw (Buehler, USA), grinder and polisher (Allied Hi-Tech, USA) is being established. Ceramic and nanomaterials lab focuses on the area of materials chemistry of advanced materials which probes into the synthesis issues for the nanoparticles (via materials chemistry routes) and try to understand the complexities involved via different structural characterisation methods. Polymer science and technology lab in department of MSE has set-up the polymer synthesis, processing and testing lab which have several processing equipments such as Haake internal mixer (Thermo Fisher Scientific), micro injection molding machine (Thermo Fisher Scientific), compression molding machine, two roll mixing mill and moving die rheometer. Polymer testing and characterization lab facilities include the Universal testing machine (Zwick-Roell), dynamic mechanical analysis (TA instruments), modular compact rheometer (Anton-Paar) and thermogravimetric analyzer (TA instruments).

Department has total of 10 PhD research scholars at present and department has published more than 23 papers in peer-reviewed international journal (American Chemical Society, Polymer, Scripta Materialia, Materials Science and Engineering A, Journal of Alloys and Compounds, Applied Surface Science, Journal of European Ceramic Society etc.) in last 3-4 years. Over the last four years, department has undertaken the sponsored projects worth of ~ 200 Lakhs from various funding agency like DST, SERB, ISRO, NRB, Denka Japan. In addition, consultancy project of more than 40 lakhs have been awarded to MSE faculties from the top MNC’s like MRF, Tata Steel, Carborundum Universal Limited (Murugappa group).


Department of Materials Science and Engineering organized an International Workshop on Reverse Engineering of Rubber Products: Concepts, Tools and Techniques on May 29, 2014. The main objectives of the Workshop are to explain the principles and science behind rubber formulation development by reverse engineering methods.  Department of Materials Science and Engineering organized an International Conference on Polymers and Allied Materials (ICPAM 2014) during May 30-31, 2014.  Faculty member from Department of MSE was instrumental in organizing the most prestigious TEDx IITPatna event on November 13, 2016.

The department continues to strive for excellence and realising its vision of becoming a leading department in the country for teaching, research and consultancy in the emerging areas of material science and engineering.


 

Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering

The vision of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering department at IIT Patna is to achieve national and international recognition through the educational and research achievements and the professional service of our faculty, staff and students. Our mission is to provide students with an overall educational experience that prepares our students to become successful professional chemical engineers capable of undertaking both life-long learning and further advanced studies.


The Chemical and Biochemical Engineering department provides opportunities for Doctorates in addition to undergraduate B. Tech program. These undergraduate and graduate programs aim to develop highly-qualified graduates who are self-motivated, independent and clear thinking individuals capable of undertaking an independent work in industry, research and development programs, and government as well as public sectors undertakings.

The department is trying to achieve fully developed infrastructure and well equipped laboratories in chemical and biochemical engineering. In our newly developed departmental library, we have good collection of reference books related to chemical and biochemical engineering. Apart from this, department envisions to regularly organizing conferences, seminars, and workshops on its own or with collaboration with other elite institutions. As of now, department has successfully developed most of the undergraduate labs primarily related to chemical engineering curriculum. In addition, department is also excelling at research front and currently equipped with biochemical lab, nano-computational lab, energy science lab, and gas-solid interaction lab. We are also approaching industries for synergistic collaboration and subsequent mutual growth.


 


Computer Science & Engineering Department

The Computer Science & Engineering department at IIT Patna was one of the first engineering disciplines of the institute. The department was formally established in the year 2008. The first batch of the undergraduate programme graduated in the year 2012. A major aim of the department is to train students and make them ready for the industry and academia. The department has cent percent placement record for undergraduates.

The department runs B.Tech, M.Tech and PhD programmes. A joint M.Tech programme (Mathematics and Computing) is also offered with the department of Mathematics. The total student strength of the department is about three hundred. The academic curriculum is constantly revised to keep in pace with the current industry and research trends. In order to allow students flexibility in choosing their courses, the number of elective courses has been increased. With a view to encourage creative ideas, the department introduced a lab course on Innovative Design in the undergraduate programme.


Faculty

The department currently has fourteen faculty members with diverse research interests. The faculty members of the department have received a number of awards and recognition - ACL President, 2016 (the highest body of NLP); Eminent Engineer Award by Institute of Engineers; NASI young scientist platinum jubilee award, 2016; BIRD Award 2016; IEI Young Engineers Award 2016 (Computer Engineering Discipline); Junior Humboldt Research Fellowship; JSPS Fellowship from Japan Govt among others.


Research

The department lays great emphasis in research and development. In the previous year (2016), the research publications of the department include 50 journal papers and 86 international conference papers. The department has close interaction with research institutes both in India and abroad, government agencies and industry. There are 12 undergoing/approved sponsored research projects with a net worth of about Rupees 933 lakhs. The department also organized one international conference, three workshops and three GIAN courses.


Computing Facilities

The department has fully equipped labs to cater to the teaching and research needs of the students and faculty members. The department has two labs each for undergraduate, M.Tech and PhD students. The department also has a hardware lab equipped with processors and other peripherals. All the systems are connected to the campus network. The computing facilities of the department include high end servers, compute clusters and storage facilities. In addition to the teaching labs, the department has five research labs: Elsevier Centre for Excellence of Natural Language Processing; ezDI Research Lab on Health Informatics; Network Security Lab; Advanced Computing Lab and Embedded Systems Integration Lab.


 

Department of Physics, IIT Patna

The Department of Physics was established and started its activity from 2008. Initially, it was to train undergraduate engineering students. Then, we initiated Ph.D program after a year. M.Tech program in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology has been started since 2012. A two year M.Sc program in Physics is also in place since 2016. Our department has a distinguished record in both teaching and research. Total fifteen esteemed faculty members of the department are actively involved in research and development in challenging areas of both Theory and Experiment.  We have state of the art research facilities in the department to support our academic programs and research. PhD program is also very successful. Most of the graduated students are the faculty members of the Reputed Institutes of Higher education in India. Others are pursuing their post doctoral research in abroad. Students of the department are engaged in regular seminar activities. Over the last few years, department has arranged a number of workshops, conferences, schools and various outreach activities: the theme being Global Excellence and Local Relevance.

Technology, meaning “the application of knowledge, tools, and processes to solve practical problem and thus extends human capabilities”, has essential components like Fundamental Knowledge, Novel Mathematical Tools, Implementation, and Applications. Students are the key as “no better way to master a technology than to employ technology’s master”. A Physics Society in the department is formed to nurture exchange of ideas and creating bridge between the above essential components to realize fruitful realization of the ongoing researches. 

In view of the rapidly advancing frontiers of science and technology and the increasing importance of interdisciplinary research, such society has a leading role in promoting scientific activities in different form. This is not only for exchanging the scientific ideas but also to promote harmony between various scientific cultures in the society. Physics Society will soon expand its activities by creating digital forum and allowing more members to register, arranging science and technology fest etc.

Department of Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry in IIT Patna has been established since the setting up of the Institute in 2008 and has evolved itself into a well known, reputed academic research center of learning in this region. Presently, the dept. has eleven extremely motivated, well qualified faculty members with a strong commitment for high quality teaching and research in the department. The Department also has one scientific officer and two junior technical superintendents to ensure smooth running of the Department.

The strong research orientation of the department is evident from the large number of project grants funded by Dept. of Science & Technology (DST), Dept. of Biotechnology (DBT), Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, Department of Atomic Energy and others, since inception in 2008. The faculty members are well recognized both nationally and internationally. Research in the department has resulted in over 100 peer reviewed national and international journal publications (of high impact factor and H-index) with more than 500 citations.


The department of chemistry also offers chemistry courses at different levels. The department started the PhD program in Chemistry from July 2009 and till date, twelve students have already graduated. Presently, more than thirty research scholars are enrolled in the PhD programme of Chemistry dept. in IIT Patna. Three research associates are also working in the department who are being funded by prestigious postdoctoral fellowships schemes such as National Post Doctoral Fellowship (N-PDF). The department is also offering B.Tech. in Chemical Science and Technology course in which sixty three students are enrolled currently. The department is also actively participating in the M.Tech. program in Nanoscience and Technology, jointly offered by the Physics and Chemistry depts. A master program in chemistry (M.Sc) has been initiated from last academic year (2016). The alumni of the departments are placed in various reputed industries and foreign universities for higher education.


A vibrant multidisciplinary research program in the Department of Chemistry at IIT Patna is supported by energetic faculty members and state-of-the-art research facilities. With a strong foundation in the conventional areas and quest for emerging areas of Chemistry, faculty and students are engaged in a range of dynamic research programs that include but are not limited to Supramolecular Chemistry, Target and Diversity oriented Organic synthesis, Nanochemistry, Catalysis, Fluorescence Spectroscopy, Bio-Spectroscopy, Polymer chemistry, Carbohydrate Chemistry, Biochemistry, Coordination polymers, Solid State chemistry, Computational Chemistry,  Theoretical Chemistry, Simulation, and Molecular Dynamics in liquid.


 

Department of Mathematics, IIT Patna

The department of Mathematics at IIT Patna was established in August, 2008. The Department is committed to impart high quality education in Mathematics at Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels.

Faculty members of the Mathematics department, IIT Patna have versatile experience in teaching as well as in research in different fields of Mathematics. The thrust research areas of the department include subject fields such as such as Bayesian Statistics, Geometric Topology and Topological Graph Theory, Mathematical Control theory, Reliability estimation, Fuzzy logic and its application, Rings & Modules, Associated Prime Rings, Mathematical Modeling in Ecology and Epidemiology, Applications of Differential Equations in Biology, Nonlinear Dynamics, Mathematical Modeling of HIV dynamics :in vivo, Wireless communications and signal processing, Numerical analysis and computations

The department is currently running a M.Sc. in Mathematics (started in 2016), M. Tech in Mathematics and Computing, and PhD in all areas. Our M. Tech & PhD students are placed in various academic institutions and industry. The department has developed a computational research lab to encourage research areas which require high computing facilities. We also have a communication and signal processing lab.

The department supports for all B. Tech programs by offering compulsory courses in Mathematics as well as relevant electives useful in different engineering applications.


 

Department of Humanities and Social Sciences

The Department of Humanities and Social Sciences incessantly tries to provide a humane perspective to the various technical branches at IIT Patna. It strives consistently to excel in its efforts day by day. Innovative and pertinent research is one such tool through which excellence can be aspired. The department envisions establishing itself as one of the best research platforms to young minds who have the undying thirst for knowledge. Past and ongoing researches in Economics, English language and literature, Linguistics, Management, Psychology, Public Health and Sociology not only try to answer useful inquiries but also try to use learning and imaginative actions as powerful tools to add to the enrichment and progress of human society. The uniqueness of the department will be realized by its successful and innovative researches along with the various interdisciplinary and multi-disciplinary collaborations both within and beyond the institute.


The Department has 7 faculty members who offer core and elective courses at the B.Tech, M. Tech and PhD levels. The department has a PhD programme of its own. Apart from this the Department of HSS organizes conferences, workshops and foreign language programmes. Given the mandate of the Government of India towards entrepreneurship, the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences offers open electives to B.Tech. students on entrepreneurship and innovation.


 

CLASROOMS AT IIT PATNA

All classrooms of the institute are equipped with modern audio-visual electronic gadgets and AIR CONDITIONED. The academic buildings have state-of-the-art laboratories.   It also houses Computer Centre with total 1 GBPS (provided by NKN) internet connections and adequate server infrastructure. Laboratories in Basic Electronics, Analog Electronics, Digital Electronics, VSLI, Control, Instrumentation and Communication are also located in these buildings. Besides this, it has two laboratories namely Hardware Lab of Computer Science and Engineering Department, and Digital and Signal Processing Lab of Electrical Engineering Department. Department in block 3  houses several  Mechanical Engineering Laboratories, viz. , Advanced Manufacturing Lab, Micromachining Lab, Dynamics Lab, Fluid Mechanics Lab, Heat and Mass Transfer Lab, Sustainable Energy Research Lab, Instruments and Control Lab, , Material Testing Lab, Metrology and Metallographic Lab, Robotics Lab, Tribology Lab and Thermal and Fluid Transport Lab. . Mechanical Department has also a separate workshop building having different conventional and CNC machines. It also houses some parts of Labs such I.C. Engine, FMS etc. The department also has CAD/CAM Lab in tutorial block.

The Electrical Engineering workshop building has an Electrical Machines Laboratory and an Advanced Electrical Engineering Laboratory. The Science block has well equipped classrooms with modern teaching gadgets, faculty chambers and advanced laboratories for Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics departments. This includes Materials Research Lab and Optics Research Lab of the Physics Department; Chemistry Instruments Lab, Chemistry Research Lab and Bioscience Lab of the Chemistry Department and Computational Research Lab of the Mathematics Department. All these Labs are home for numerous state-of-the art equipments. IIT Patna has recently developed three highly sophisticated virtual classrooms equipped with ultra modern electronic gadgets funded by Department of Information Technology, Government of India, under the National Knowledge Network project. These classrooms add to the concept of virtual classroom where one can learn something from the teacher who is teaching remotely. The newly iaugatred building also has a central library, the administrative office, a modern dispensary and individual offices for faculty members . The central library is stocked with sufficient number of text and reference books. Online access to various technical and scientific journals under the INDEST-AICTE consortium is available. IIT Patna has a team of around 91 young and dynamic faculty members. Many more are expected to join by the end of this year. Faculty members are extremely active and engaged in teaching, research and developmental activities of the Institute. All of them are accommodated within the campus .

Credit System The B. Tech programs consist of 8 semesters spread over 4 academic years. A student takes 5 to 6 theory courses in addition to laboratory courses in each semester. Credits are allotted to various courses depending on the number of lecture/tutorial/laboratory hours per week. A student's performance in a course is continuously evaluated throughout the semester and culminates in the award of a grade on a 10-point scale. Based on the performance of a student, each student is awarded a final letter grade in each subject at the end of the semester. The letter grades and the corresponding grade points are as follows:

The students' Semester Performance Index (SPI) is evaluated by weighted average of grade points secured in all the courses registered by the student in that semester. The Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) representing the weighted average of the grade points secured by the students in all the semesters is also recorded.



Rules For Change Branch:

The Institute permits a limited number of students to change from one branch of study to another after the end of the second semester, subject to certain conditions, some of which are given below:

Only those students will be eligible for a change of branch who have completed all the common credits required in the first two semesters of their studies in their first attempt with a CPI of not less than 8.00 and without having had to pass any course requirement in the summer term examination.

Change of branch is permitted strictly on the basis of merit (CPI at the end of two semesters) subject to the limitation that the strength of a branch does not fall below the existing strength by more than ten percent and does not go above the sanctioned strength by more than ten percent.

Facilities:
At this point of time, the Institute has sufficient basic facilities and modern infrastructure to run B.Tech. programs in Chemical Engineering,, Civil and Infrastructure Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. IIT Patna is well equipped with  modern research facilities in science and engineering disciplines which is substantiated with the enrolment of M.Tech. and PhD students. Some of the state-of-art facilities have been created to boost the education and research. Institute is also launching its medical incubation centre.

Many international institutes have shown their interest in collaborating with IIT Patna in various areas of research and teaching. Some of them include, University of Houston, Louisiana State University, University of North Texas, University of Columbia at Missouri, University of Saskatchewan, University of New South Wales, National University of Singapore, and University of Hartford etc.

Hostel accommodation. All students are provided inside accommodation   .The hostels for Boys and Girls are within the institute  campus.  The hostels are equipped with uninterrupted power and water supply. The hostel rooms are also provided with internet connections. Hostel has separate mess and canteen facility. For recreation and entertainment of the students, the hostels have facilities for indoor games, such as, Table Tennis and Carom. It also has a TV room with cable connection. To keep the students fit and healthy, a well equipped gymnasium is also provided in the hostel. Institute has developed sports facilities which include  football, cricket,athletics, volley ball, basketball and lawn tennis.. The hostel wardens are residing on campus.
Students of IIT Patna are actively involved in several extra-curricular activities. The students organize their annual function called Anwesha. During this technocultural extravaganza, they organize several events. The other event organized by the students of IIT Patna is the Annual Foundation Day. IIT Patna also participates in the PanIIT and inter-IIT sports meet.

Health care facilities

The institute has a hospital within the campus and it has full time medical staffs.  Institute has also signed  MoU with the best hospitals of the city  where students gets referred for treatment .For the outdoor health care, the services of four  local hospitals, viz. Mahavir Vatsalya Aspatal Sahyog Hospital, Ruban Hospital and Kurji Holy Hospital  are available to the students/staff and the faculty members. A 24-hour ambulance service is also provided by the institute  hospital in case of emergencies. A pharmacist and an assistant are available on a full-time basis to provide emergency first-aid, and for routine medical services. A 24x7 Ambulance service is also available to provide emergency services to everyone who is part of IITP system. Students of IIT Patna are covered under the Vidyarthi mediclaim insurance policy. Under this scheme, every student can avail the cashless medical facility throughout the country up to Rs. 50,000/-.


Student Life at Institute:

 In IITP education, collaborative activities and development of leadership quality are important. In this respect we encourage sports and cultural activities in this institute. We have playgrounds for  football, Volleyball, Cricket, Badminton, Basketball etc. and many indoor and outdoor game facilities. IIT Patna is developing more facilities in the coming years. Students have participated in the inter IITs Sports Meet. Also, several cultural and technical fests are being organized each year. For example, we successfully organized ANWESHA ‘16 where IIT Patna invited few top technologists from India and abroad and various technological programmes were organized. An Entrepreneurship Week was organized where special lectures from top brass of the industries were arranged. Financial Assistance:

The Institute provides Merit-cum-Means Scholarships to B. Tech students on merit basis and to those having financially weak backgrounds.

Training & Placement:

The Training and Placement Cell of the institute handles all aspects of placements at IIT Patna for the graduating students of all departments. Right from contacting companies to managing all logistics of arranging for tests, pre-placement talks and conducting final interviews the training and Placement Cell officials and volunteers provide their best possible assistance to the recruiters.

Training and Placement Cell (TPC) of the Institute is actively engaged in developing relationship between IIT Patna and various Industrial organizations and employers of technical and scientific manpower. The Cell has organized Placement activities for the final year B. Tech, M.Tech & Ph.D students.

The Training & Placement Cell has been successful in getting 135 offers from 33 Companies for B.Tech & M.Tech students for the session 2015-16. Few of the names are Google(1)by PPO, Coal India(12), BPCL(7), Arista Networks(4), CISCO Systems(1), Tata Motors(8), Amazon(5), TCS(17), Samsung(6), Texas Instruments(1), Bank of America(4), ezDI(8), Mahindra and Mahindra(3), Wipro(8), L&T ECC(3), etc and few companies are in pipeline. The highest package was offered by Google Rs 1.8 Crore during PPO (Pre Placement Offer) and  Rs 27 Lakhs per annum by Amazon during Campus Placement for both B.Tech and M.Tech students. Total 94% of the B.Tech and 31.48% of the M.Tech students have been placed through Campus Placement. The average salary is Rs. 9.94 Lakhs per annum for B.Tech and Rs. 5.76 Lakhs per annum for M.Tech students.

The summer internship for a period of 8 weeks is compulsory component for per-final year students of all the branches of B.Tech. Students have been successful in getting summer internship offer from various private companies, public sector undertakings, Institutes and R&D organizations in India & abroad. Few of the names are Microsoft, Arista Networks, ezDI, Overcart, Bosch, DRDO, NTPC, IOCL, Hero Moto Corp, Tata Motors, NAL, IISc Bangalore, Maruti Suzuki, Tata Steel etc.

Industry And Alumni Relations:

Incubation Centre IIT Patna

The Incubation Centre IIT Patna (IC IITP) is located in the sprawling 500+ acre campus of IIT Patna at Bihta in beautiful and pristine surroundings. IC is currently operating from a 10,000 sqft space provided by IIT Patna.  The construction of permanent building of IC is initiated.

Origin

IC IIT Patna is a result of the collaboration between the Government of India (47%) and the Government of Bihar (53%). This is an INR 47.10 Cr project associated with the Digital India and Make in India initiative.

Vision

IC IIT Patna aims to be the leading technology business incubator in the country for the development of products and intellectual property in the area of Electronic System Design and Manufacturing (ESDM) with a special focus on Medical Electronics. 

Objectives

India presently has a very poor doctor-to-patient ratio and lags behind in medical facilities. The cost of equipment and lack of connectivity is a major roadblock in providing affordable electronics/diagnostic systems. The key issues relate to the affordability, accessibility, and awareness for preventive measures.

Medical Electronics segment requires significant enhancement of availability of skilled manpower in the ESDM sector. In this effort, we aim to utilize the expertise at IIT Patna to identify, nurture and translate technology ideas and innovation in the broad area of Electronic System Design and Manufacturing (ESDM) with a focus in Medical Electronics.

ICIITP will be a stepping stone for the growth of entrepreneurship in the geographical region and will give impetus to entrepreneurship among students, faculties and other innovators.

Incubation Programme

The two year Incubation programme at the IC IITP is designed to support start-ups for idea validation, product development, building and testing prototypes and early stage scaling of innovations. IC IITP will enable the start-ups with:

  • Fully furnished office space, conference rooms, internet and communication facilities
  • State of the art  laboratories for Electronic System Design, Development and Prototyping,  PCB Prototyping and Assembly, Testing and Measurement, Mechanical packaging and Product Prototyping
  • Guidance by mentors from Industry, IITP faculty,Investors and IC management on business, technology, IPR and other aspects
  • Investor Connect, which will help in getting needed funds

The proposal will be admitted to a two year Incubation program or three months pre-incubation program based on evaluation of the proposal by a Project Evaluation Team, comprising of eminent personalities from industry, academia, government and investment community.

Robo Bionics

The first start up “Robo Bionics”, a young and dynamic team of 5 including students and recent graduates, is operating from IC now to develop an active upper limb prosthesis with tactile feedback. IIT Patna envisions its future as a major source of new technical and scientific ideas and as a front-runner in executing sponsored research projects and industrial consultancies. IIT Patna has research laboratories equipped with state-of-art facilities in Engineering and Natural Sciences. Faculty members of the departments are actively working with various government agencies and R&D organizations so as to enable the participation of IIT P in large number of cutting edge scientific research.


Research & Development (R&D) Unit at IIT Patna is special unit with dedicated staff members to manage the projects funded by external funding agencies. Within a very short period the Institute has attracted and delivered varieties of sponsored projects from both public and private sectors.

The incubation Centre at IIT Patna focuses on setting up state-of-the-art infrastructure for nurturing technology, ideas and innovations in the areas of Electronics System Design and Manufacturing (ESDM). Other notable and significant R&D facilities include Sophisticated Analytical Instrument Facility (SAIF), Elsevier Centre of Excellence for Natural Language Processing, Accenture IIT AI Lab etc. Our faculty members and students have received several awards, recognitions and laureals from various national and international bodies.

Various workshop and short term courses have been conducted at IIT Patna which include courses under MHRD scheme of Global Initiative for Academic Networks (GIAN). Through GIAN faculty members from foreign countries visited IIT Patna and offered various specialized courses in Engineering, Science, and Humanities and Social Sciences. IIT Patna has also organized various national and international level conferences like “International Symposium on  5G”, “15th Asian Conference on Solid State Ionics (ACSSI-2016)”, “6th International Symposium on Embedded Computing and System Design (ISED)” etc. inviting participations from across the world.

IIT Patna realises importance of innovation and the need for assisting the innovators in  translating their ideas into marketable products and also in protecting their right on the Intellectual Property (lP) The institute therefore proactively promotes innovation as well as helps the innovators to protect the resulting IP that are developed in the Institute.

 SOPHISTICATED ANALYTICAL INSTRUMENT FACILITY (SAIF)

 

SAIF at IIT Patna is a data collection facility for scientific community for their advanced research by paying nominal charges.

 Funded by Department of Science & Technology, Government of India, New Delhi to the tune of Rs 75.00 milion . The researchers of IIT Patna, other academic/research institutes as well as industries can use this facility for the characterization/identification of chemicals/materials.

 Presently, two sophisticated instruments are available in this center and the details of those instruments are given below

 

1.High Resolution Liquid chromatograph–mass spectrometer (HR-LCMS)

 The system has a liquid chromatography system attached with a mass spectrometer. The make and model of the system is given below.

Applications: HR-LCMS is a powerful technique for separation, general detection, and potential identification of chemicals. It provides information pertaining to the molecular weight, elemental composition, and molecular structure of a compound.  This technique provides accurate mass measurements to determine the elemental compositions of new synthetic molecules natural products and drugs etc.

2.Single Crystal X-Ray Diffractometer(SC-XRD)

Applications:

Single-crystal X-ray Diffraction is a non-destructive analytical technique which provides detailed information about the internal lattice of crystalline substances, including unit cell dimensions, bond-lengths, bond-angles, and details of site-ordering. Directly related is single-crystal refinement, where the data generated from the X-ray analysis is interpreted and refined to obtain the crystal structure.

 

Other sanctioned instrument which will be added to this SAIF is 500 MHz NMR spectrometer.

 1. WHEAT CROP CUTTING QUADRICYCLE BASED MODEL

    A cutting mechanism is installed on quadricycle. Horizontal feed and cutting operation both will be simultaneously performed by pedal force. The design is complicated and applied for patent. Fabrication is in process.

2. HANDLE OPERATED GARBAGE AND SOIL COLLECTOR

To avoid harmful and Less efficient way of collection and transportation of waste and construction material, handle operated garbage and soil Collector is applied for patent. The machine has also been fabricated.

3. AUTOMATIC IRRIGATION SYSTEM:

Famer has to travel miles from his home just to switch on/off the water supply in the farms. Also there is uncertainty about the presence of electricity. This task becomes very difficult especially during night time. Designing a system by which a farmer can just send SMS to regulate the water supply.

 

 The product developed at IITP aims to  reduce the effort as well as helps to control the adequate water supply in the farms.

 

4. LOW COST AUTOMATED CELL MANIPULATION DEVICE USING MICROBOTS IN MAGNETIC FIELD.

Designing fabrication and controlling of image guided automated non- prehensile magnetic micro-manipulation system applicable for targeted drug delivery.

 

5. A BIAXIAL STRECHING DEVICE FOR SIMULTANEOUSLY STRECHING OF AN ELASTONER SAMPLE

The developed device is applied for simultaneous stretching of elastomeric materials biaxially to improve electro mechanical responses. The device comprises square basement, supporting structure, top frame, sliding bars, power screw, and umbrella rod. Four sliding bars attached with the upper frame can move along the diagonal axes. The sliding bars are connected to the umbrella rods which are attached with a spline goes up and the umbrella rods deflect to outward direction and subsequently create a linear motion sliding bars. Four grips are provided for grabbing a test specimen at the free end of the sliding bars. With the rotation of the power screw the bars move away from each other and the sample if stretched bi directionally.

 

6. Students under supervision of faculty members are working in identifying problem and technology improvisation under the umbrella of Unnat Bharat Abhiyan, MHRD,Govt of India to create a virtuous cycle between society and responsive academic system to respond to the development needs of rural India.

IIT Patna has a strong tradition of encouraging students to take active part in the life of the community. Students are therefore encouraged to organize and participate in the extra-curricular events. This leads to the development of leadership quality and collaborative mind-set among our students. IIT Patna boosts of various technical, cultural and sports events organized by students including Anwesha, Infinito, and Celesta.  We have excellent sports facilities on campus and our student participate in inter-IIT sports meet and inter-hall competitions.  We successfully organized a TEDxIITPatna event where IIT Patna invited many eminent speakers from India and abroad. Hostel accommodation.

All students are provided accommodation in the campus. The hostels are equipped with uninterrupted power and water supply. The hostel rooms are also provided with internet connections. Hostel has separate mess and canteen facility. For recreation and entertainment of the students, the hostels have facilities for indoor games, such as, Table Tennis, Badminton and Carom. The hostel also has a TV room with cable connection. To keep the students fit and healthy, a well-equipped gymnasium is also provided in the hostel. Institute has developed sports facilities which include football, cricket, athletics, volley ball, basketball and lawn tennis. Location and Accessibility:

Bihta  is well connected to other parts of India by road, rail, and air. A few trains has stoppage at Bihta Railway Station also. The institute is approximately 40 km away from the Patna Junction and 35 kilometers from the Loknayak Jai Prakash Narayan International Airport Patna.
