About the Institute:

IIT Gandhinagar strives to offer the best undergraduate engineering education in India with unmatched innovations in curriculum. All new undergraduate students undergo a five-week Foundation Programme designed to nurture creativity, communication skills, ethics, teamwork, social engagement and physical fitness. To promote critical thinking and an appreciation of the interdisciplinary character of knowledge, students take almost 20% of their coursework in the humanities and social sciences – nearly twice the proportion of other leading engineering colleges in the country – as well as courses in design and the life sciences. We empower our students to discover and pursue their passion with a very liberal branch change policy, dual major and dual degree programmes, an emphasis on project based learning and options for honors/minors.

IIT Gandhinagar (IITGN) has moved to its permanent campus on the banks of the Sabarmati river near the twin cities of Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar. The first phase of constructions is completed and includes well-furnished hostels, classrooms, library, laboratories, auditoriums, social and interactive spaces, playgrounds, faculty and staff housing, a few shops and other basic infrastructure. With over 3 kilometers of river front, a combination of ravine landscape and flat areas of land, a rich biodiversity, earthquake-resistant confined-masonry construction, the IITGN campus has numerous unique aspects to boast about.

Academic Structure:

IIT Gandhinagar offers 4-year BTech programmes in Chemical, Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, Computer Science, and Materials Science & Engineering. The institute also offers 2-year MSc programme in Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry, a 2-year MA programme in Society and Culture, MTech, PGDIIT and PhD programmes in several disciplines in Engineering, Sciences and Humanities & Social Sciences. The Institute has introduced a futuristic undergraduate curriculum keeping in mind the urgent need to develop engineers and problem solvers for the 21st century.

The brand new curriculum is a significant departure from any other engineering curriculum in the country. It focuses on the overall development of students and has a significant component of humanities and social sciences, compulsory coursework in the life-sciences, exposure to design and creativity, and it provides flexibility to students with several options to explore their interests.

Foundation Programme for Self-Development: The programme helps students make a smooth transition from the days of single-minded preparation for the JEE to a new phase in life that will ultimately shape them as well-rounded human beings, outstanding engineers and responsible citizens. This programme focuses on nurturing creativity, communication skills, ethics, teamwork, and includes various games, workshops on theatre, appreciation of architecture, arts, etc.

Comprehensive Viva-Voce: The Institute has introduced a comprehensive viva-voce to identify the talents and weaknesses of students. The students are encouraged to pursue their talents vigorously and to address areas of concern. This is a mandatory activity conducted every semester for all undergraduate students by a panel of faculty and enables the Institute to establish one-on-one connections by giving attention and feedback to each individual, and assess our teaching-learning ambience.

Peer Assisted Learning: This programme is to help those first year BTech students who face difficulties in adapting to new culture and medium of instruction in their coursework. It is built on the philosophy of engaging students in learning outside the classroom by seeking help from peer educators. The students engage with their seniors in active conversations on topics related to their curriculum.

Dual Major Programme: This programme enables students enrolled in the BTech programme to complete a second major in any other engineering discipline of their interest. For example, a student admitted to Chemical Engineering can opt for a second major in any one of Computer Science, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Materials Science & Engineering. Students enrolled in this programme will have to complete all the compulsory courses as defined by the second discipline in addition to the minimum credit requirement of their parent discipline. On successful completion, a BTech degree mentioning both majors will be awarded.

Dual Degree Programme: This programme enables students to get an MTech degree in addition to the BTech degree within a reasonable duration (approximately five years). Besides their parent discipline, students are free to opt for any other discipline, provided they meet the eligibility criteria. Students need to obtain a minimum of 24 credits through courses and a minimum of 32 credits through MTech thesis units in addition to the credits counted towards their BTech degree requirements. Students with a valid GATE score or a CPI ≥ 8.0 are eligible for fellowship. Separate BTech and MTech degrees will be awarded upon successful completion of the requirements.

Short-Courses: IITGN has a Short-Course Series for the well-rounded growth of its students. Each short-course runs for 8-10 hours and is conducted by a guest scholar on a topic different from the subjects in the regular curriculum. Students earn one credit (listed in the grade card) for each short course, which is voluntary. Recent short-courses have been conducted on Indian Democracy, Entrepreneurship, Energy Efficiency, Literature, and Cosmology.

Rules For Change Branch:

To provide an environment where students are free to develop their passions, IITGN has adopted a very liberal policy for branch change. Virtually all students are given an opportunity to switch to a discipline of their choice in the second year. To convey the excitement, promise, and relevance of each branch of engineering, all first year students take a course that provides a bird’s eye view of all the engineering disciplines. This course includes invited lectures from eminent academic and industrial personalities, interaction sessions with IITGN faculty members, panel discussions, hands-on activities in laboratories, tours to industrial and research facilities, group discussions, etc.

After successful completion of the first two semesters, students may apply for branch change under the following guidelines:

1.       Any student with a CPI 9.50 or higher is allowed a change of programme without any restriction.

2.       For others, change is permitted in order of merit determined by their CPI. Students with a CPI of 6.50 or higher and without any fail grade/backlogs are eligible to apply.

3.       The request for change (in the order of merit) for a student (say S1) from programme A to programme B will be considered so long as:

(a)    Strength of programme B does not exceed by more than 10% of the sanctioned strength for that programme.

(b)    Strength of students on the rolls in programme A does not fall below 50% of its sanctioned strength.

(c)    The request of S1 will be re-considered (again in order of merit) if another student transfers to branch A, provided this re-consideration does not violate (b) above.

 4.       All such transfers can be effected only once at the beginning of the second academic year. Applications for change of Programme during subsequent academic years are not entertained.
