About the Institute:
The National Institute of Technology Sikkim is a premier technical institute of the region. NIT Sikkim is one among the ten newly sanctioned NITs by the Government of India in 2009 under the eleventh five year plan and it is declared as an 'Institute of National Importance'. NIT Sikkim is an autonomous institute and functioning under the aegis of Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India.
NIT Sikkim started its academics in 2010 with three engineering departments - Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, and Electrical and Electronics Engineering at undergraduate level. The institute admits students into the B.Tech degree programme on the basis of ranks obtained in the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE Mains) since 2013 (Through AIEEE till 2012) and the scheme of Direct Admission of Students Abroad (DASA). 
The academic activities of the institute are being conducted at its Ravangla campus which is located at Ravangla also known as Rabong as a prominent tourist spot in Sikkim while its permanent campus is coming up at Khamdong. Ravangla campus is surrounded by great scenic beauty and in its serenity, students learn and develop at their best. The institute provides the ambience where creativity and new ideas flourish, producing leaders of tomorrow by imparting learning blended with excellence. 1.     Tuition fee is fully exempted for S/ST & PH students as per MHRD order no: 33-4/2014-TS.III, Dated: 24.06.2016

2.     The most economically backward students (whose family income is less than Rs.1.00 lakh per annum) shall get full remission of the tuition feeas per MHRD order no: 33-4/2014-TS.III, Dated: 24.06.2016

3.      The other economically backward students (whose family income is between Rs.1.00 to Rs.5.00 lakh per annum) shall get remission of 2/3rd of the tuition fee4.

4.     The Gen/OBC/Others category of students who doesn’t included in the above criteria will have to pay full fee.

5.     For regular SC/ST students the tuition fee is exempted on production of proof that the student’s self or family income from all sources does not exceed Rs.4.5 Lakhs per year. However, this exemption shall not be applicable for sponsored SC/ST students. Further, whose self & family annual income is more than Rs.4.5 Lakhs Per year has to deposit same fee as of general category. (Ref: MHRD 33-4/2004-TS III, Dated: 16.06.2015).

Academic Structure:

COMPUTER SCIENCE ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT

_ 

_·         The Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) is one of the departments that started operating from the initiation of National Institute of Technology Sikkim in the year 2010. The department aims to provide an outstanding research environment complemented by excellence in teaching.

_·         The department offers four years B. Tech. degree, two years M. Tech degree and PhD programmes. The department has a comprehensive curriculum on topics related to all aspects of Computer Science with an emphasis on applicability that is provided using latest techniques of engineering. The course structure is up-to-date and includes courses on state-of-the-art to equip the students and teachers with the latest developments in the field. It is also proposed to develop interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary projects based on the expertise of faculty members.

_·         The areas of research are Cryptography, Network Security, Parallel-Distributed and High-Performance Computing, Algorithms, Cloud Computing and Wireless and Sensor Networks to build research groups and leverage the research activities in Sikkim in particular, and North-East region in general using a coordinated effort of various other organization working in the field of community development using science and technology. The Department has state-of-the art infrastructure supported by high speed Ethernet and wireless network.

_·         The department enjoys a rich research culture through various projects under schemes such as Visvessharya scheme, DIT and DST project grants, National Mission on Himalayan Studies, specific developmental projects for north-eastern region, etc. The departments also contribute towards community developments through Unnat Bharat Plan and Scientific lifestyle development of local community (as per scheme of Department of Atomic Energy).

ELECTRONICS AND COMMUNICATION ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT

_1.      ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT:

_The department of Electronics and Communication engineering was established in 2010 with the laying of the foundations of National Institute of Technology Sikkim. Within the short span of time, the department, initially started with a handful of faculty expertise, has expanded to having a varied strength consisting of:

_About the Department

_ The Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEE) was established in the year 2010 along with foundation of National Institute of Technology Sikkim. The Department trains students and expand their knowledge in the field of EEEand allied areas such as power electronics, control systems, power systems, machine & drives, instrumentation etc. along with relevant laboratories. It also offers a wide range of elective subjects that a student can choose from to cater his/her field of interest. Students are encouraged to take challenging projects as part of their curriculum and faculty members with vast experiences are always eager to discuss and support for their progress.

_From 2014-15 academic sessions, PhD scholars have been joining in the Department and working in research areas including Power, Control, Machine & Drives, Robotics & Machine Learning, Bio-medical Instrumentations, Non-conventional Energy. The research works are complimented and progressed by experienced members of faculty with vast experience in their respective fields of interests.

_MECHANICAL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT

_The Department of Mechanical Engineering was established in 2013 with the inception of the Institute to produce globally competent Mechanical Engineers capable of contribution to society through innovation and working in multidisciplinary fields. This department offers 4 Years B.Tech programme in Mechanical Engineering, where the students are encouraged to acquire knowledge facilities with a perfect blend of intellectual and practical experiences.

__The department offers PhD programs in major thrust areas viz. Thermal Engineering, Fluid Mechanics, Design & Dynamics and Production Engineering and also multi-disciplinary fields. High Performance Computing (HPC) facility is also available in the institute and research works is going on using this data intensive computing system. The department is planning to start master degree program soon. The various aspects of Mechanical Engineering fields are as:

_CIVIL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT

_National Institute of Technology Sikkim was established in 2010 and the Civil Engineering Department is part of the institute since 2013.Currently the department is offering four year B.Tech. program. The department is planning to start a PhD program soon. The Civil Engineering department is actively engaged in research areas that deal with the design, construction, and maintenance of the physical and naturally built environment, including works like roads, bridges, canals, dams, and buildings.

Rules For Change Branch:
Change of Branch–only for B.Tech. Programme

1. As an incentive for excellent academic performance in the first two semesters, a
limited number of students may be allowed transfer to the branches of their choice.

2. All students who have successfully completed the first two semesters of the courses in
the first attempt with CGPA of not less than 7.50 shall be eligible for consideration
for change of branch. Eligible students shall apply through the HOD/FIC/FA on issue
of notification.

3. Maximum number of inward or outward transfers will be such that the strength of the
branch should not fall below the existing strength by more than 10%. Also in no case
the maximum number of students in a branch may exceed maximum departmental
allocation of seats.

4. If a student with a higher CGPA is not offered a particular branch because of other
constraints, this may be offered to eligible students who have applied.

5. Pass or fail in audit courses will not be considered for change of branch.

6. Final list of candidates with permitted branch changes will be published by the
academic section with copies to the Dept/FA.

B100005CS ) joined the Centre for Information Services and High Performance Computing (ZIH), TU Dresden Germany as a visiting exchange student to conduct his one semester along with simultaneous project work for his Bachelor thesis at CIHP, TU Dresden, Germany.

    University of Bremen, Germany

    The research initiatives of National Institute of Technology Sikkim yielded a positive result when one of its PhD scholars, Mr. Himangshu Sarma, selected to carry out his PhD thesis under the joint PhD programme with University of Bremen, Germany. The said PhD programme is sponsored by CLINK programme of European Union.

    IIT Guwahati

    NIT Sikkim and IIT Guwahati have come closer on various spheres. The long informal relationship of two sister institutes from North East was materialised into strong academic bonding when IIT G and NIT Sikkim signed an MoU for research and development. The MoU provides various opportunities for the growing institute which includes:

  • Informal faculty exchange.
  • Assistance in conducting the laboratory examinations of B.Tech students. It is pertinent to mention here that bunch of students were given options for conducting their ECE, CSE and EEE in IIT G for last two years. We have been sending a group of excellent students to IIT G for academic exposure, laboratory classes and examinations.
  • IIT G has facilitated NIT Sikkim by providing access to the various placement drives. From the first batch of students of NIT Sikkim many of them have got their jobs by attending these placement drives at IIT G.
  • IIT G has also extended access to its library, laboratory and various other sections to the faculty members of NIT Sikkim for their academic pursuits.
  • There have been a strong collaboration at the higher up level of these sister institutes for various purposes.

    IIT Kharagpur

    In its pursuit of academic excellence, NIT Sikkim is thriving hard for setting up ever new milestones of success. It was always felt by the higher ups and the faculty members that we should have a strong bonding with one of the most prestigious and recognised institutes.Therefore, NIT Sikkim collaborated with IIT KGP for various academic pursuits which includes the following:

  • Students of NIT Sikkim participated in the pool campus drives organised at IIT KGP.
  • IIT KGP has provided the access to its library, laboratories and research centers to the faculty members of NIT Sikkim.
  • Some of the labs of students of NIT Sikkim are also conducted at IIT KGP. The past two years have witnessed exchange of ideas between the higher ups of NIT Sikkim and IIT KGP in various academic research and innovative planning.

    NIT Sikkim is located 2kms away from a town Ravangla Or Ravongla which is a small tourist town situated in South Sikkim district of Sikkim, India.

    It is connected by a state highway to other major towns in the state and lies between Pelling and Gangtok.

    The nearest Airport to reach NIT Sikkim is Bagdogra and nearest railways station is New Jalpaiguri(NJP). 

    From airport/railway station one has to reach SNT Bus Stand near Siliguri Junction. 

    At the Bus Stand there are various transportation facilities available such as: Private/shared taxi to reach Ravangla via Singtam or Namchi. 

    Government Bus to reach Ravangla departs at 12.30pm from SNT Bus Stand.
