Academic Structure:

At IIITG undergraduate education emphasizes a broad academic foundation, development of deep subject-area knowledge, a variety of rich learning experiences inside and outside the classroom, and the cultivation of skills to help students become lifelong learners. With an enduring dedication to the pursuit of excellence, IIITG offers unparalleled student experiences across a broad spectrum of academics environment. The B.Tech. courses offered at IIITG are:

B.Tech. in CSE

The programme is designed to create innovators and researchers. Students are given a strong foundation in CSE that includes electronics and hardware. The B. Tech. (CSE) program at IIIT-Guwahati starts with computing oriented courses first, and allows the possibility of doing science courses later. Besides being better suited for an IT program, it also enables the possibility of students seeing newer applications and possibilities of relating IT with these subjects.

B.Tech. in ECE

The programme is designed to create innovators and researchers. ECE courses like electronics, signals & systems, communications, VLSI, and embedded systems are introduced in the early semesters. The main objectives of the B.Tech.(ECE) program are to produce students who are well prepared for Indian industry with necessary core competency to succeed long-term in engineering/entrepreneurship careers (post B.Tech.), and who are well prepared to undertake PG studies and research careers.

The academic year has been divided in to two semesters namely the MONSOON semester from July – Dec and the WINTER semester from Jan – May.

The winter vacation period for students is generally in the month of December and the summer vacation period is from May to July.

Curriculum

First year program will be common for both CSE & ECE this will allow flexibility to students in moving from one to the other. After the first year common program, the second year program will be relatively fixed, comprising mostly of core courses for the program. 3rd year onwards the program will be mostly flexible comprising of electives, which may be organized as streams.

The institution provides laptops to the students (for which students will pay 5000/- per semester, for a total of Rs. 40,000/- spread over 4 years), which help them to carry out their tasks better and faster.

Library

The IIITG library is stocked with books that cater to the student's academic and research requirements. It subscribes to the IEEE and ACM e-journal packages.  The library has a spacious and well-lit reading room.  It fosters an atmosphere for academic learning and ensures a decorum of discipline, so that the students can concentrate their entire focus on learning. Library automation is being implemented.

Academic Activities

The institute frequently organizes talks by academicians and industry experts. IIITG is the birthplace of Perspective - an interdisciplinary group of scholars and faculty members. Perspective organizes monthly lectures and periodic workshops.  https://perspectivemeet.wordpress.com/

Student Life at Institute:

Co-curricular activities are an integral part of a student’s life in IIITG. Our winter semesters are abuzz with sports and a cultural fest – Yuvaan. Students compete in both outdoor (Football, Cricket, Kabaddi, Volleyball), indoor (Chess, Carom, Badminton, Table Tennis, arm-wrestling, computer games) and cultural events (singing, dance, play)

Summer semesters are relatively quiet with students concentrating on their studies. Students can explore urban life surrounding the institute in Guwahati. The excellent location of the institute allows students to explore nearby libraries, museums, restaurants and markets.

Hostel Life

The student hostel is situated in the vibrant Shine Heaven Colony. The students are accommodated in 3BHK apartments, with each room shared amongst two students. Each apartment has a common living room, kitchen and two balconies. The spacious accommodations are provided with 24-hour power backup supply, lift-service and high-speed internet connection. The institute also provides a laptop to each student, to help them complete their academic work or to use them at their own leisure.

Wardens visit the hostel regularly to monitor and ensure proper functioning of the hostels and comfort of the students. Major discussions and activities among the students can be carried out in the common room. Timings are strictly adhered to for the incoming and outgoing of the students for their safety. Ample green cover all around the residential area provides a visually appealing and healthy environment for the residents. Different festivals and cultural events are celebrated together within the hostel in a very friendly and homely atmosphere.

Dining & Mess

There are mess facilities in the hostels as well as at college. Canteens provide students with fresh and nutritious food. They cater to the need of both vegetarian and non-vegetarian students. There are appropriate and fixed timings for dining in hostels.

Clubs

To harvest the interest of students in different fields, the institute currently has three clubs: The Programmers Club, Robotics Club and Cultural Club. These clubs lead to creativity and diversification of ideas, at the same time provide support to organize events. All the budding young engineers with new ideas participate in club activities to develop their knowledge in respective fields and also take part in competitions.

Financial Assistance:

The Institute does not offer any scholarships. However, it helps students to get scholarships from various Govt. and other agencies.

Training & Placement:
The first batch will graduate in April 2017. So Training and Placement activities will start next semester. A number of final year students are doing internships at various places in India and abroad. They may get offers from these places.
Industry And Alumni Relations:
TCS is our industry partner. We have interactions with them for summer internships, PhD scholarships. We are exploring remote lectures by TCS engineers in specific topics. Other industry interactions will grow once the institute moves to its campus.
Recreational/Extra Curricular activities:
Sports & Recreation

A healthy mind resides in a healthy body. Sports and games are a major aspect of complete development both physically and mentally for a person. In this competitive age, sports is equally essential to supplement and enhance the academic development. The students at IIITG indulge in a number of sporting activities like basketball, football, badminton, etc.... which inculcate in them a spirit to participate, compete and win.
