About the Institute:

Indian Institute of Information Technology Guwahati (IIITG) is an institution under MHRD, Govt. of India. It offers B Tech courses in Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) and Computer Science Engineering (CSE), and runs PhD programmes in ECE, CSE, Mathematics, and Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS). IIITG started operations in August 2013 with B.Tech programmes in CSE and ECE. The first batch of B. Tech students completed their programme in May 2017.  PhD programmes were started in 2015.

IIITG is one of the 20 IIITs set up by the Central Govt. in PPP mode. A Bill (Act of Parliament) to declare all the PPP-IIITs (including IIITG) as Institutes of National Importance has been placed before the Lok Sabha.

IIITG strives to be attentive to academic needs of every student. Classes are conveniently scheduled between 9 A.M. to 5 P. M. Every class room is air-conditioned and has projection facilities. An Institute-wide  wi-fi system provides Internet access throughout the Institute.

At present, the temporary campus of IIITG is located near the Guwahati Railway Station. It operates from a building within the Assam Textile Institute premises. The building holds classrooms, labs, faculty rooms, seminar hall and administrative offices.  All the classrooms in IIITG are spacious, air-conditioned and are equipped with overhead projectors. A 1 Gbps National Knowledge Network (NKN) link has been provided to IIITG. Further, DG  power back up is available in case of power failure. The foundation stone for its permanent campus was laid on 19 January, 2016 by Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi in the august presence of former Governor of Assam Shri Janaki Ballabh Patnaik, former Chief Minister of Assam Shri Tarun Gogoi and former Minister of Human Resources & Development Smt Smriti Zubin Irani. The permanent campus is being constructed on 70 acres of land about 4 km from the Guwahati airport. It is planned to move to the campus by the end of  2017 / early 2018.

Prof. Gautam Barua former Director of IIT Guwahati is the Director of the Institute.

Academic Structure:

At IIITG undergraduate education emphasizes a broad academic foundation, development of deep subject-area knowledge, a variety of rich learning experiences inside and outside the classroom, and the cultivation of skills to help students become lifelong learners. With an enduring dedication to the pursuit of excellence, IIIT-G offers unparalleled student experiences across a broad spectrum of academics environment. The B.Tech courses offered at IIITG are:

B.Tech. in CSE

The programme is designed to create innovators and researchers. Students are given a strong foundation in CSE that includes electronics and hardware. The B.Tech (CSE) program at IIIT-Guwahati starts with computing oriented courses first, and allows the possibility of doing science courses later. Besides being better suited for an IT program, it also enables the possibility of students seeing newer applications and possibilities of relating IT with these subjects.

B.Tech. in ECE

The programme is designed to create innovators and researchers. ECE courses like electronics, signals & systems, communications, VLSI, and embedded systems are introduced in the early semesters. Students also take a number of CSE oriented courses: Programming, Data Structures, Operating Systems, Networks.  The main objectives of the B. Tech(ECE) program are to produce students who are well prepared for Indian industry with necessary core competency to succeed long-term in engineering/entrepreneurship careers (post B. Tech), and who are well prepared to undertake PG studies and research careers.

The academic year has been divided in to two semesters namely the MONSOON semester from July – Dec and the WINTER semester from Jan – May.

The winter vacation period for students is generally in the month of December and the summer vacation period is from the beginning of May to the third week of July.

Curriculum

First year courses are   common for both CSE & ECE. This gives flexibility to students for branch change after the first year. After the first year common program, the second year program will be relatively fixed, comprising mostly of core courses for the program. 3rd year onwards the program will be more flexible comprising of electives, which may be organized as streams.

There is one HSS course every semester, for a total of eight courses. Courses in Physics (2), Chemistry, and Biology are taught from Semester III onwards.

The institute provides laptops to the students (for which students will pay 5000/- per semester, for a total of Rs. 30,000/- spread over 6 semesters), which help them to carry out their tasks better and faster. Students can bring their own laptops too.

Library

The IIITG library is stocked with a good number of books and online journals to cater to the needs of the students, research scholars and faculty members of IIITG. The Library currently has 1,214 printed volume of Books and subscribes to the IEEE and ACM e-journal packages through which the users can get access to 218 journals (approx.) and 3698 conference proceedings (approx.). Users can access these online resources in their electronic devices i.e. laptops, tablets etc. since the library is Wi-Fi enabled . The library has a spacious and well-lit reading room.  It fosters an atmosphere for academic learning and ensures a decorum of discipline, so that the students can concentrate their entire focus on learning. Library automation is being implemented through TCS ion (integrated institutional software). All major activities and services (i.e. acquisition, circulation, OPAC, reservation of book/s etc.) of the library is provided to the users through the library module of TCS ion.

Academic Activities

The institute frequently organizes talks by academicians and industry experts. IIITG is the birthplace of Perspective - an interdisciplinary group of scholars and faculty members. Perspective organizes monthly lectures and periodic workshops.

Student Life at Institute:

A Students’ Gymkhana Council co-ordinates student activities. Members are elected by direct elections. Faculty advisors assist the Student Body.

Co-curricular activities are an integral part of a student’s life in IIITG. Our winter semesters are abuzz with sports and a cultural fest – Yuvaan. Students compete in both outdoor (Football, Cricket, Kabaddi, Volleyball), indoor (Chess, Carom, Badminton, Table Tennis, arm-wrestling, computer games) and cultural events (singing, dance, play)

Summer semesters are relatively quiet with students concentrating on their studies. Students can explore urban life surrounding the institute in Guwahati. The excellent location of the institute allows students to explore nearby libraries, museums, restaurants and markets.

Hostel Life

The student hostel is situated in the vibrant Shine Heaven Colony. The students are accommodated in 3BHK apartments, with each room shared amongst two students. Each apartment has a common living room, kitchen and two balconies. The spacious accommodations are provided with 24-hour power backup supply, lift-service and high-speed internet connection. The institute also provides a laptop to each student, to help them complete their academic work or to use them at their own leisure.

Wardens visit the hostel regularly to monitor and ensure proper functioning of the hostels and comfort of the students. Major discussions and activities among the students can be carried out in the common room. Timings are strictly adhered to for the incoming and outgoing of the students for their safety. Ample green cover all around the residential area provides a visually appealing and healthy environment for the residents. Different festivals and cultural events are celebrated together within the hostel in a very friendly and homely atmosphere.

Dining & Mess

There are mess facilities in the hostels as well as at college. Canteens provide students with fresh and nutritious food. They cater to the need of both vegetarian and non-vegetarian students. There are appropriate and fixed timings for dining in hostels.

Clubs

In IIITG the students are encouraged to actively participate in co-curricular clubs and activities along with their campus regular study. Each student club is advised by a faculty/staff members here on campus. Currently, there are three different clubs: Programming Club, Robotics Club and Cultural Club; however in future the number of clubs will be increased. Through these clubs the student experience a broad array of cultural, academic, technical and social activities. For instance, the Programming Club allows the students to explore their computer programming skills in the field of computer science and IT to develop a sense of professionalism.

The Robotics Club gives a student to conceptualize his idea and design state-of-the-art prototypes in the field of robotics following the international standards. Certainly, the student form concern clubs takes part in different competition on national and international level regularly.

Financial Assistance:

The Institute does not offer any scholarships. However, it helps students to get scholarships from various Govt. and other agencies.

Training & Placement:

Placement cell provides a platform for the final year students to get job offers and also looks after the internships for the pre-final year students. The first batch completed its programme in May 2017. In the recently conducted placement session, several firms like Amazon, Directi, Smartprix, Nagarro, TCS, Zaloni, IBM Global services, FR Technology, Mettl etc., have participated and a number of students have been recruited. About 60% of the students were placed by the end of April 2017. Last year, several pre-final year students have done internships at various places. This year also, a number of pre-final year students have got internship offers from various reputed Institutes and firms.

Industry And Alumni Relations:
TCS is our industry partner. We have interactions with them for summer internships, PhD scholarships. We are exploring remote lectures by TCS engineers in specific topics. Other industry interactions will grow once the institute moves to its campus.
Recreational/Extra Curricular activities:
Sports & Recreation

A healthy mind resides in a healthy body. Sports and games are a major aspect of complete development both physically and mentally for a person. In this competitive age, sports is equally essential to supplement and enhance the academic development. The students at IIITG indulge in a number of sporting activities like basketball, football, badminton, etc. which inculcate in them a spirit to participate, compete and win.

IIIT Guwahati has its annual techno-cultural-sports fest named “Yuvaan” to give equal opportunities to boys and girls to portray their skills in various fields of recreation and sports. Also, we encourage students to take part in various inter IIIT/institutes sports events, so as to cater the need of performance outside the campus premises on which our students perform at par with other institutes. IIIT Guwahati secured overall second runner’s up trophy in the  recent inter IIIT sports meet held at IIITDM Kancheepuram, 2016. Also, in the same meet, one of our students emerged as a dark horse in carom bagging a Gold medal for IIITG and  was adjudged the best player in same category.
